Outcome Based Education and Programme Outcome Analysis
Write outcomes, align them, map them, measure attainment and produce the programme outcome document your accreditor asks for.
What you will learn
- Define outcome based education and distinguish it from content based and time based education.
- State the four principles of outcome based education and give an example of each from a health programme.
- Distinguish the graduate profile, programme outcomes and course outcomes by altitude, audience and number.
- Write an outcome with its four parts, the learner, the observable verb, the condition and the standard.
- Explain constructive alignment and test a course for it in three questions.
- Build a course outcome to programme outcome matrix with weights and depth labels.
- Distinguish direct and indirect evidence of outcome achievement and give two examples of each.
- Set a performance threshold and an attainment level scale before results are collected.
- List the eight sections of a programme outcome document and what evidence each one carries.
- Produce the document from the mapping and attainment tool with its annexes.
Syllabus
5 modules, each with a knowledge check🎯1. What outcome based education isStart from the graduate you promised, then work backwards. Everything else follows from that one move.4 lessons · 27 min
- 1.1 The question that starts a curriculum7 min
- 1.2 The four principles7 min
- 1.3 The outcome chain7 min
- 1.4 Gains, myths and the Ethiopian setting6 min
Objectives. Define outcome based education and distinguish it from content based and time based education. State the four principles of outcome based education and give an example of each from a health programme. Explain backward design and the outcome chain from graduate profile to decision. Describe what the national accreditation standards and the WFME standards require a programme to publish about its outcomes. Identify three practical gains and three common misunderstandings of outcome based education.
✍️2. Writing outcomes at three levelsGraduate profile, programme outcome, course outcome. Different altitudes, one grammar, verbs you can observe.4 lessons · 27 min
- 2.1 Three altitudes7 min
- 2.2 Verbs, domains and levels7 min
- 2.3 The eight faults and how to repair them7 min
- 2.4 Course outcomes that serve the programme6 min
Objectives. Distinguish the graduate profile, programme outcomes and course outcomes by altitude, audience and number. Write an outcome with its four parts, the learner, the observable verb, the condition and the standard. Select verbs by domain and level using Bloom for knowledge, Miller for clinical performance and a psychomotor and affective ladder. Detect and repair the eight common faults in outcome statements. Write course outcomes that name the programme outcomes they serve.
🗺️3. Constructive alignment and the mapOutcome, teaching and assessment pointing the same way, then a matrix that shows the whole programme at once.4 lessons · 27 min
- 3.1 Constructive alignment7 min
- 3.2 Building the map7 min
- 3.3 Reading the map7 min
- 3.4 Blueprinting from the map6 min
Objectives. Explain constructive alignment and test a course for it in three questions. Build a course outcome to programme outcome matrix with weights and depth labels. Read a curriculum map for holes, overload, shallow coverage and poor sequencing. Blueprint an assessment from the map so that every item traces to an outcome. Use the free mapping tool in this app to produce the matrix and the blueprint for your own programme.
📊4. Measuring attainmentTurn tagged assessment results into one number for each outcome, then compare it with a target you set in advance.4 lessons · 27 min
- 4.1 Evidence that counts7 min
- 4.2 Course outcome attainment7 min
- 4.3 Programme outcome attainment7 min
- 4.4 Targets, traps and decisions6 min
Objectives. Distinguish direct and indirect evidence of outcome achievement and give two examples of each. Set a performance threshold and an attainment level scale before results are collected. Compute course outcome attainment from tagged assessment results. Compute programme outcome attainment from the weighted map and interpret it against a target. Recognise the five data traps that make an attainment number untrustworthy.
📘5. The programme outcome documentOne document that holds the promise, the map, the evidence, the numbers and the decisions, and a calendar that keeps it alive.4 lessons · 28 min
- 5.1 Eight sections7 min
- 5.2 Producing it with the tool7 min
- 5.3 Closing the loop and the calendar7 min
- 5.4 Capstone, write your document section7 min
Objectives. List the eight sections of a programme outcome document and what evidence each one carries. Produce the document from the mapping and attainment tool with its annexes. Describe the closing of the loop from attainment to decision to re measurement. Place the outcome review in the governance calendar with owners and dates. Write the programme outcome document for one programme outcome of your own programme.
How it is taught
Narrated micro lessons
Every screen has recorded narration that adds context and examples from Ethiopian hospitals. Lessons are five to ten minutes and resume where you stopped, on any device.
Decisions, not slides
Branching scenarios, matching, ordering and short written tasks with immediate feedback and the reasoning, whichever way you answer.
Blended option
Five ninety minute workshops, one per module, worked on the learner's own curriculum documents.
Tools for Monday
Printable ward cards, checklists and audit forms are linked from the modules and free to adapt.
Frequently asked
How long do I have?
There is no deadline. Most learners finish in one to three weeks of short sessions. Your progress is saved to your account.
Is there a cost?
No. Enrolment, the course, the certificate and the resources are free.
What if I fail the post-test?
You can retake it. The feedback after each item tells you which module to revisit.
Is the certificate recognised for licence renewal?
The certificate states the CEU value calculated at one CEU per hour of learning in line with the national CPD Guideline, with a verification number. Recognition for licence renewal depends on accreditation by the CPD accreditor, which ERAS Africa and the EAA are pursuing.
Can my hospital run it as a workshop?
Yes. Each module has a facilitated 90 minute session plan. Contact ERAS Africa through the website to arrange a cohort.
